A disturbing case of corruption has shaken the East Hidalgo Detention Center in McAllen, Texas. Former correctional officer Jhaziel Loredo, 33, has been ordered to prison for smuggling contraband items into the facility, announced U.S. Attorney Ryan K. Patrick.
Loredo pleaded guilty on March 4. Today, District Judge Micaela Alvarez sentenced Loredo to 28 months in federal prison, immediately followed by three years of supervised release.
Between October 2018 and August 2019, Loredo used his position to bring contraband into the detention center. This included controlled substances, which he then distributed to federal inmates in exchange for bribe payments.
The total amount of bribe payments accepted by Loredo from family members of multiple inmates totals approximately $1,900. This egregious act of corruption has left many questioning the integrity of the detention center.
The U.S. Marshals Service, Office of Inspector General, and FBI conducted the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Amy L. Greenbaum and Patricia Cook Profit prosecuted the case.
Loredo will be permitted to remain on bond and voluntarily surrender to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility to be determined in the near future.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of accountability and integrity within our correctional facilities. Loredo’s actions have compromised the safety and security of the inmates and staff at East Hidalgo Detention Center.
