Nashville Man Charged with Federal Firearms Offense
A Nashville man is facing federal charges after he rammed a police cruiser to escape arrest. Joe Lewis Williams, Jr., 35, was indicted on May 18, 2017, and charged with being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.
According to a criminal complaint, Williams was arrested on April 12, 2017, by officers of the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department. Williams had attempted to evade arrest and subsequently assaulted a Metro police officer.
Williams was initially stopped by a MNPD officer who recognized the vehicle as matching the description of one involved in an earlier hit-and-run. The officer ordered Williams to place his vehicle in park, but he refused and pulled away, ramming the officer’s patrol car and pushing it out of the way.
Williams then fled the area and was found minutes later parked at the rear of a nearby hotel. He ignored the officer’s orders and ran through the hotel’s breezeways before being caught by the officer. Williams resisted and struggled with the officer, and a handgun was recovered from his pocket.
Williams has a history of violent crime, with prior federal felony convictions for carjacking, use of a firearm in commission of a crime of violence, being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, and aggravated identity theft.
Williams faces a sentence of up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted. An indictment is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives and the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Rascoe Dean is prosecuting the case.
