BOSTON — Grimy Times has learned that Joe Scott, Jr., 53, of Leominster, was arrested and charged with embezzling $49,000 from a labor union.
According to the indictment, Scott, who served as Treasurer of the International Union of Electrical Workers, Communication Workers of America, Local 81154, used his position to embezzle funds from the union’s bank accounts. The indictment alleges that Scott made debit card expenditures, withdrew funds and issued checks for his personal benefit.
The indictment, which was unsealed on June 17, 2024, alleges that Scott used the stolen money to pay for personal expenses, including storage costs, home internet and cell phone services, electrical and gas services, home improvement tools, dumpster rental and personal expenses while on vacation.
Scott faces a sentence of up to five years in prison, up to three years of supervised release and a fine of up to $10,000. Sentences are imposed by a federal district court judge based on the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and statutes which govern the determination of a sentence in a criminal case.
The indictment was returned by a federal grand jury in Worcester and Assistant U.S. Attorney Brendan O’Shea is prosecuting the case. Scott was released on conditions following an initial appearance in federal court in Worcester.
