Oakland Man Sentenced to 5.5 Years for Meth Trafficking

A 52-year-old Oakland man has been sentenced to five and a half years in prison for trafficking methamphetamine, U.S. Attorney Melinda Haag announced yesterday.

John Alan Hunt, of Oakland, Calif., was indicted by a federal grand jury on April 23, 2013, on charges of Conspiracy to Distribute and Possess with the Intent to Distribute Methamphetamine, and Distribution and Possession with the Intent to Distribute Methamphetamine.

Hunt pleaded guilty on July 29, 2013, to Distribution and Possession with the Intent to Distribute Methamphetamine. According to the plea agreement, Hunt admitted to selling approximately 48.4 grams of actual methamphetamine to an undercover officer in the vicinity of High Street in Oakland on two separate occasions in August 2012.

“One of ATF’s top priorities is to rid our neighborhoods of dangerous criminals who plague our community by selling drugs,” said Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Special Agent in Charge Joseph M. Riehl. “The success of this investigation is attributed to the excellent undercover work that was conducted and the solid partnership between ATF, Oakland Police Department, and the United States Attorney’s Office.”

Hunt has been in federal custody since his initial appearance on May 6, 2013. The sentence was handed down by The Honorable Claudia Wilken, U.S. District Court Chief Judge, who also sentenced the defendant to a 4-year period of supervised release.

Chinhayi Cadet is the Assistant U.S. Attorney who is prosecuting the case with the assistance of Elizabeth Garcia. The prosecution is the result of a 10-month investigation by the ATF and the Oakland Police Department.
