A disturbing case of child exploitation has come to light in Upstate New York, with a former resident of Canastota pleading guilty to the crime.
John Flinn, age 26, has admitted to taking sexually explicit images of a six-year-old victim on three different occasions. In addition to these explicit images, Flinn also possessed images of child pornography, including toddlers, and images depicting the sadistic and masochistic sexual abuse of children.
The images were discovered as part of an ongoing investigation by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Homeland Security Investigations (Syracuse, New York and Tampa, Florida), and the New York State Police.
As part of his guilty plea, Flinn faces a minimum of 15 years and up to 30 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and a term of supervised release of at least 5 years and up to life. Flinn will also be required to register as a sex offender.
The sentencing is scheduled for March 16, 2021. This case is being prosecuted as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative designed to protect children from online exploitation and abuse.
Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to better locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as identify and rescue victims.
