Defendant Charged with Brutal Assault of U.S. Postal Service Mail Carrier
A 49-year-old Bronx man has been charged with a brutal assault on a U.S. Postal Service mail carrier, leaving the victim hospitalized with multiple deep lacerations.
John Garcia, a resident of the Bronx, is accused of attacking the mail carrier with a sharp object on July 16, 2025, at approximately 12:50 p.m. in the Bronx, New York. The victim, who was wearing a uniform, sustained serious injuries to their head and right ear.
According to the allegations, Garcia’s attack was senseless and left the mail carrier hospitalized. ‘Attacks like this are senseless and threaten the good people and systems we rely on every day,’ said U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton. ‘They will not be tolerated.’
The Postal Inspection Service takes matters involving the safety and well-being of postal service employees as a top priority, said USPIS Acting Inspector in Charge Edward Gallashaw. ‘Let it be clear, we will investigate and identify anyone who commits a criminal act against a USPS letter carrier.’
Garcia is charged with one count of assaulting an officer of the U.S. using a deadly or dangerous weapon, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. The maximum potential sentence in this case is prescribed by Congress and provided here for informational purposes only, as any sentencing of the defendant will be determined by a judge.
The case is being handled by the Office’s General Crimes Unit, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin Grossinger in charge of the prosecution. Garcia’s charges are merely accusations, and he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
