Crimes Run Deep in Barnstable
A Barnstable man’s involvement in the dark world of narcotics has finally caught up with him. John Kirk Costello, 45, of Milton, has been sentenced to 30 months in prison for his role in distributing methamphetamine and fentanyl.
According to court documents, on January 13, 2021, Costello sold approximately 1,000 counterfeit Adderall pills to an undercover law enforcement officer. These pills were not only fake but also laced with methamphetamine, putting unsuspecting users at risk of overdose or even death.
On November 2021, a search of Costello’s home turned up a substantial quantity of illicit substances, including 264 grams of 95% pure methamphetamine, 6 kilograms of 7% pure methamphetamine, 2,472 counterfeit Adderall pills laced with methamphetamine, and 1,707 counterfeit Percocet pills laced with fentanyl.
Costello’s crime was a brazen one, selling fake prescription pills to those seeking a fix. His actions not only fueled the opioid epidemic but also contributed to the growing problem of counterfeit medications.
On July 11, 2024, Costello pleaded guilty to one count of distribution of methamphetamine, one count of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, and one count of possession with intent to distribute fentanyl. His subsequent sentencing has brought a measure of justice to the community.
As part of his sentence, Costello will serve 30 months in prison followed by four years of supervised release. This harsh punishment serves as a warning to those involved in the illicit narcotics trade that they will be held accountable for their actions.
United States Attorney Leah B. Foley and Michael J. Krol, Special Agent in Charge of Homeland Security Investigations in New England, announced the sentencing. Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Tolkoff of the Criminal Division prosecuted the case.
The people of Massachusetts can rest a little easier knowing that justice has been served in this case. However, the ongoing struggle against narcotics trafficking requires continued vigilance and dedication from law enforcement and the community alike.
As we continue to grapple with the opioid epidemic, cases like this serve as a reminder of the importance of holding those responsible accountable for their actions. The Grimy Times will continue to bring you updates on this and other important cases affecting our community.
