Wilmington, DE – Between April 2019 and November 2019, Dr. Shayasta S. Mufti, a former physician in Newark, ordered medically unnecessary genetic tests for over 100 Medicare patients, often after brief or no consultations. These tests cost Medicare thousands of dollars per patient.
There was no physician-patient relationship, no examinations, and no use of the test results to inform treatment. The U.S. Attorney’s Office says this scheme drained critical resources from Medicare.
“Physicians who order unnecessary and expensive services… undermine the integrity of programs that millions of Americans rely on,” said U.S. Attorney Benjamin L. Wallace.
Dr. Mufti agreed to pay $180,000 to resolve the allegations, which are merely claims.
