TAMPA, FL – Johnathan Anton Williams, 38, of Ruskin, Florida, is facing a lengthy federal prison sentence after being indicted on charges of distributing methamphetamine, possessing a firearm as a convicted felon, and possessing a firearm while engaged in drug trafficking. The charges stem from an incident on May 4, 2022, where Williams allegedly conducted a drug sale while armed.
According to the indictment, Williams had a firearm and ammunition in his possession during the methamphetamine transaction. This isn’t Williams’ first brush with the law. Court records show a significant criminal history, including previous felony convictions for robbery, possession of cocaine, possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, and – critically – being a felon in possession of a firearm. Federal law explicitly prohibits individuals with felony convictions from owning or possessing firearms or ammunition.
If convicted on the drug charge, Williams could receive a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison. The firearms charges carry even steeper penalties. Carrying a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime carries a minimum mandatory penalty of 5 years, potentially escalating to life in prison. Additionally, possessing a firearm as a convicted felon could add another 10 years to his sentence. The U.S. Attorney’s Office has also signaled its intention to seize the firearm and ammunition used in the alleged crime.
U.S. Attorney Roger B. Handberg of the Middle District of Florida announced the indictment, emphasizing the seriousness of the charges. “This case underscores our commitment to dismantling drug trafficking operations and holding accountable those who illegally possess firearms, especially those with prior criminal records,” a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office read. The investigation was a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
Assistant United States Attorney Michael R. Kenneth is prosecuting the case, with Assistant United States Attorney James A. Muench handling the forfeiture proceedings. This case is being touted as part of “Project Safe Neighborhoods” (PSN), a federal initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by fostering collaboration between law enforcement agencies and local communities. The program’s stated goals include building trust, supporting community organizations, and focusing enforcement efforts.
An indictment is not a declaration of guilt. Williams, like all defendants in the U.S. legal system, is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. However, the evidence presented in the indictment paints a damning picture of a repeat offender allegedly continuing a pattern of criminal behavior while illegally armed. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as it progresses through the federal court system.
