Defendant Caught with ‘Extraordinary Quantity’ of Methamphetamine

A California man, Johnny Jordan Thompson, 48, was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison without parole for transporting an ‘extraordinary quantity’ of methamphetamine through Missouri.

Thompson was stopped by a Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper on Interstate 70 in Cooper County on Sept. 12, 2019. The trooper found 11 packages of methamphetamine weighing approximately 20 pounds (8.87 kilograms) in the trunk of a borrowed car.

A further eight pounds (almost 3.3 kilograms) of methamphetamine was discovered hidden under the carpet of the passenger floorboard.

Thompson admitted to possessing the methamphetamine with the intent to distribute. He pleaded guilty to the charge on Dec. 21, 2021.

Thompson has a long history of crime, with prior felony convictions including vehicle theft, armed bank robbery, and attempted murder. He was discharged from parole in the attempted murder case in California in December 2018 and committed this federal offense less than a year later.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Lauren E. Kummerer. The investigation was led by the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Thompson’s sentence as a career offender reflects his history of serious crime. He will spend the next 15 years in federal prison without the possibility of parole.
