GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – The grimy streets of Johnson City were hit with a harsh sentence as Joey Edward Holmes, 39, was locked away for over eight years in federal prison on April 6, 2017.
Holmes, a 39-year-old resident of Johnson City, Tennessee, faced the Honorable R. Leon Jordan, U.S. District Judge, who handed down a verdict of 100 months behind bars. Upon his release from federal custody, Holmes will be under the watchful eye of the U.S. Probation Office for the next five years.
This sentence follows Holmes’s guilty plea in December 2016 for conspiring to manufacture methamphetamine and being a felon in possession of a firearm. The court records revealed that Holmes was an active player in a larger conspiracy, producing meth using pseudoephedrine supplied by others. During his arrest on April 2016, authorities uncovered a well-equipped drug lab within his home, complete with a 9 mm semi-automatic pistol, ammunition, crystal meth, digital scales, and hundreds of plastic bags – all indicative of the sinister trade.
Since his arrest in 2016, Holmes has been ensnared in federal custody. This case was a testament to the combined efforts of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), with Assistant U.S. Attorneys J. Greg Bowman and Helen Smith representing the United States.
But this wasn’t just another drug bust; it was part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a national strategy fostering local law enforcement partnerships to enforce gun laws effectively. The PSN program allows prosecutors to leverage various local, state, and federal statutes to ensure that firearm criminals face severe penalties. It is an initiative designed to address the unique challenges faced by each community, focusing specifically on those areas hardest hit by gun violence.
