MERIDIAN, MS – Jonathan Lewis Jennings, 31, of Anniston, Alabama, is facing serious time after a federal jury convicted him of two counts of robbery and multiple firearm offenses stemming from a pair of brazen holdups in Meridian, Mississippi, back in January 2018. The seven-day trial concluded December 12, 2022, in U.S. District Court, revealing a pattern of armed theft that local and federal investigators have finally brought to a close.
According to evidence presented in court, Jennings targeted a local liquor store and a convenience store, holding them up at gunpoint on January 15, 2018. The Meridian Police Department swiftly responded, collecting crucial DNA evidence that initially linked Jennings to the crimes. While local law enforcement established a strong foundation, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) stepped in to further solidify the case, uncovering details that confirmed Jennings’s planning and execution of the robberies.
The prosecution, led by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Adam T. Stuart and Charles W. Kirkham, successfully argued that Jennings’s prior criminal record made the possession of the firearm used in the robberies illegal. As a convicted felon, Jennings was already prohibited from owning or carrying a weapon, adding another layer to the charges against him. The specific charges include two counts of robbery, two counts of using or carrying a firearm in connection with the robberies, and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.
The ATF, in a statement released through U.S. Attorney Darren J. LaMarca, emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in tackling violent crime. Special Agent in Charge Kurt Thielhorn highlighted the agency’s commitment to investigating and prosecuting individuals who endanger communities through armed robbery. The case was pursued under the umbrella of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a joint federal, state, and local initiative designed to reduce violent crime through targeted enforcement and community-based prevention programs.
Project Safe Neighborhoods, a cornerstone of the Department of Justice’s violent crime reduction strategy, focuses on the most violent offenders and pairs enforcement efforts with reentry programs aimed at preventing recidivism. This approach, officials say, is key to achieving lasting reductions in crime. While sentencing details are not yet available, Jennings is now facing a potentially lengthy prison term for his actions in Meridian.
The investigation remains closed, but the Grimy Times will continue to monitor the case as it moves toward sentencing. The conviction serves as a stark reminder that armed robbery will not be tolerated, and those who choose to prey on communities will be held accountable for their crimes. The Meridian Police Department and ATF are to be commended for their diligent work in bringing Jennings to justice.
