A devastating collision on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation in 2021 resulted in the death of a woman, and now the man responsible is facing the consequences. Jordan Joseph Morgan, 31, of Browning, Montana, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter, a charge brought forth by U.S. Attorney Jesse Laslovich.
Morgan faces a maximum penalty of eight years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release. However, as part of a plea agreement, the parties have agreed that a specific recommendation of 12 months and one day imprisonment is appropriate.
On the evening of November 8, 2021, Morgan encountered the victim, identified as Jane Doe, in Browning. The two got into an argument, and Morgan got into his vehicle while Jane Doe stayed by the open window at Morgan’s door. Morgan pulled forward with Jane Doe still at his door and holding onto the open window. After a short distance, the vehicle pulled to the right, throwing Jane Doe under the vehicle. Morgan continued driving and ran over Jane Doe.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Lori Harper Suek and Kalah A. Paisley are prosecuting the case. The FBI, Blackfeet Law Enforcement Services, and Montana Highway Patrol conducted the investigation. Chief U.S. District Judge Brian M. Morris will determine Morgan’s sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors. Sentencing is set for December 6, 2024.
The tragic incident highlights the importance of prioritizing road safety and responsible driving practices. This case serves as a reminder of the severe consequences of reckless behavior behind the wheel.
Morgan has been detained pending further proceedings. The court will ultimately decide his fate based on the evidence presented and the applicable laws. The victim’s family and loved ones can take some solace in knowing that justice is being served.
The case has been closely monitored by local authorities and the community. The Blackfeet Indian Reservation has a strong sense of justice and accountability, and this case is a testament to that.
