Tampa Man Pleads Guilty to Selling Stolen Identities
A 23-year-old Tampa man has pleaded guilty to aggravated identity theft after selling 86 stolen identities for $10 each.
According to a plea agreement, Jordan Tito met with an undercover informant in September 2016 and sold him the stolen identities, which included names, dates of birth, and social security numbers. The documents were printed on separate sheets of paper and included the name, address, date of birth, and social security number of an identity theft victim.
Of the 86 stolen identities sold, 29 were children. The victims’ credit information was compromised, allowing the buyer to make counterfeit credit cards and fake IDs.
The case was investigated by the U.S. Secret Service and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Assistant United States Attorney Mandy Riedel is prosecuting the case.
Tito faces a mandatory penalty of two years in federal prison. A sentencing date has not yet been set.
The sale of stolen identities has become a growing concern in recent years, with many victims unaware that their information has been compromised. Law enforcement agencies are working to crack down on these types of crimes and bring perpetrators to justice.
