The grim reality of crime continues to plague our nation, and in one disturbing case, a Mexican national has been sentenced to 24 months in prison for his role in a heinous sex crime.
José De Leon Medina, 39 years old, of Mexico, was sentenced by United States District Court Judge Damon R. Leichty after pleading guilty to illegal reentry of a removed alien and failure to register as a sex offender, announced United States Attorney Clifford D. Johnson.
According to documents in the case, De Leon Medina was convicted of child molesting in 2019, a crime that requires him to register as a sex offender. After De Leon Medina completed his sentence of imprisonment for the crime, he was removed from the United States to Mexico. Two months later, Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials learned De Leon Medina had illegally reentered the United States and was living in Goshen, Indiana.
Furthermore, De Leon Medina had failed to register as a sex offender, a requirement that is meant to protect the public from individuals with a history of sex crimes. This egregious failure to comply with the law is a stark reminder of the risks that our communities face when individuals with a history of sex crimes are allowed to operate with impunity.
The case against De Leon Medina was investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Enforcement and Removal Operations. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Jerome W. McKeever.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of holding individuals accountable for their crimes. By sentencing De Leon Medina to 24 months in prison, the court has sent a clear message that sex crimes will not be tolerated in our society.
As we continue to navigate the complex and often disturbing world of crime, it is our duty as journalists to shine a light on the perpetrators of these heinous acts and to bring attention to the cases that deserve it. In this case, the sentence of José De Leon Medina serves as a reminder that justice will be served, no matter how long it takes.
