Joseph Brown, 34, Sentenced to 25 Years for Murder in Washington DC 2015

Washington DC – In a shocking turn of events, Joseph Brown, 34, was sentenced to 25 years of incarceration for his role in two homicides that shook the community in Washington DC. The crimes, which took place in 2015, resulted in the deaths of two young men, Amari Jenkins and Antwan Baker.

According to prosecutors, Brown emerged from a blue van and fired 28 rounds at Amari Jenkins, 21, in front of St. Luke’s Catholic Church on August 18, 2015. Jenkins was pronounced dead at the scene. Brown also shot Antwan Baker, 29, six times in the back of the head and neck on November 12, 2015, in the 5300 block of Clay Terrace, N.E.

Brown’s sentencing comes after he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder while armed and voluntary manslaughter while armed. Judge Marisa J. Demeo handed down the 25-year sentence, which will be served consecutively for both crimes.

In a separate case, Rondell McLeod, 30, was sentenced to 10 years of incarceration for his role in the murder of Amari Jenkins. McLeod’s sentence will run consecutively to an 11-year sentence he is serving for federal robbery charges brought in the United States District Court for the District of Maryland.

Alicia N. McCoy, 28, was also sentenced to two years of incarceration for lying in the grand jury during the investigation of Amari Jenkins’ murder. Her sentence will run consecutively to a number of felony sentences she is serving in Maryland for violent crimes committed there.

U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Chief Pamela Smith commended the work of the officers and detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department who investigated the case. They also thanked Assistant U.S. Attorneys Michael P. Spence and Andrea Coronado, and former Assistant U.S. Attorney Gilead I. Light, who prosecuted the case for the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Victim/Witness Advocate Jennifer Allen and former Victim/Witness Advocate Marcia Rinker were also recognized for their efforts in supporting the victims and their families.

The sentencing of Joseph Brown and Rondell McLeod brings some sense of closure to the families of the victims, but it also serves as a reminder of the devastating impact of violence in our communities.
