McKees Rocks Man Pleads Guilty to Access Device Fraud Charge
A resident of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, has been found guilty of access device fraud, according to a federal court announcement.
Joseph E. Placzek, 25, of McKees Rocks, pleaded guilty to one count of access device fraud before United States District Judge Terrence F. McVerry.
According to the court, Placzek used the stolen identity of another person to open credit cards at Capital One bank, which he then used to purchase cruise vacations at Carnival Cruise, as well as merchandise at Amazon.com and Home Depot, among other retailers, totaling approximately $69,000.
The investigation was led by Inspectors from Homeland Security Investigations and the United States Postal Inspection Service, as part of the Western Pennsylvania Financial Crimes Task Force (WPFCTF), a collaborative, multi-agency effort to combat financial crimes in Western Pennsylvania.
The WPFCTF was joined by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Pennsylvania, the United States Secret Service, the United States Postal Inspection Service, the Department of Homeland Security, the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office, the Allegheny County Police Department, the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police and the Pennsylvania State Police.
Placzek is scheduled to be sentenced on November 11, 2016, at 10 a.m. He faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a fine of $250,000, or both, as provided by law.
Assistant United States Attorney Gregory C. Melucci is handling the prosecution of the case on behalf of the government.
