Cedar Rapids Felon Handcuffed and Jailed for 4+ Years

A convicted felon with a penchant for breaking the law has landed himself a lengthy stint behind bars. Joseph John Senger, age 34, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was sentenced to 51 months in federal prison for unlawfully possessing a destructive device, specifically a sawed-off shotgun.

Senger’s troubles began on April 29, 2022, when Cedar Rapids Police officers stopped his truck after it veered off the road and onto the sidewalk. During the ensuing search, officers uncovered a methamphetamine pipe, four grams of methamphetamine, additional methamphetamine pipes, 17 shotgun shells, a set of brass knuckles, and a shortened Revelation shotgun.

As a convicted felon, Senger’s possession of the firearm and destructive device is a serious offense. In a plea agreement, Senger admitted to the charges and accepted the prison term.

Under the terms of his sentence, Senger will serve a three-year term of supervised release following his prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through community-based initiatives and targeted law enforcement efforts.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Anthony Morfitt and investigated by the Cedar Rapids Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.

Joseph John Senger is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison to serve his sentence.
