Joseph Lowry, Hobbs Act Robbery, New York 2015

Rochester Man Sentenced to 128 Months for Robbing 7-Eleven

A 22-year-old Rochester man has been sentenced to 128 months in prison for his role in the armed robbery of a 7-Eleven convenience store in August 2015.

Joseph Lowry pleaded guilty to Hobbs Act robbery, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence, and possession of a stolen firearm. He was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Charles J. Siragusa.

The robbery occurred on August 10, 2015, at the 7-Eleven store located at 1469 Lake Avenue in Rochester. Lowry and his co-defendant, Johnny Blackshell, entered the store intending to steal cash and goods. After jumping over the service desk, Lowry ordered the employees to the ground while Blackshell pointed a silver handgun at the victim’s head.

The victim opened the cash register, which contained approximately $80 in U.S. currency, and Lowry removed the money. The duo also took an unknown quantity of cigarettes, tobacco, chewing gum, and numerous rolls of scratch-off lottery tickets.

Lowry and Blackshell then ran out of the store east toward Lake Avenue. Several of the stolen lottery tickets were redeemed by Lowry and others until the New York Lottery was able to invalidate the stolen tickets.

In addition to the charges related to the convenience store robbery, Lowry was also sentenced for possession of a stolen firearm. That charge related to a separate incident that occurred on August 1, 2015, in which Lowry was found to possess a stolen shotgun.

The investigation was led by the Rochester Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
