Joseph M. Calhoun, Passing and Uttering a Counterfeit Check of a Political Subdivision, Nebraska 2023

Counterfeit Check Scam Exposed in Nebraska

A brazen scheme to pass off fake checks as legitimate has landed a Nebraska man in hot water. Joseph M. Calhoun, 34, was sentenced to five months in prison for passing and uttering a counterfeit check of a political subdivision.

The scheme, uncovered on January 11, 2018, involved Calhoun and his co-conspirators printing three counterfeit checks payable to Calhoun. The checks, worth a total of $14,346, were falsely marked as coming from the Housing Authority of the City of North Platte.

Calhoun traveled to banks in Lincoln and Omaha, where he cashed the checks. After collecting the money, he turned it over to his co-conspirators, who had printed the checks in the first place. Calhoun was paid for his role in the scam.

The scheme left the First National Bank and Trust of North Platte Nebraska out of pocket, with Calhoun deliberately defrauding the bank in the process.

Courtesy of the Omaha Police Department, the investigation into the scheme has brought Calhoun to justice. The authorities have ensured that Calhoun will face the consequences of his actions.

As part of his sentence, Calhoun will serve five months in prison. Upon his release, he will begin a three-year term of supervised release. Calhoun must also pay $14,346 in restitution.

This case serves as a reminder that passing off fake checks as legitimate will not be tolerated. The authorities will continue to crack down on those who engage in such schemes, ensuring that justice is served.
