JOSEPH RIVERA, Receipt of Child Pornography, Louisiana 2023

A disturbing case of child exploitation has come to a close in Louisiana. JOSEPH RIVERA, a 34-year-old resident of New Orleans, has been sentenced to five years imprisonment for his egregious crime.

According to court documents, law enforcement officials executed a search warrant at RIVERA’s residence on August 6, 2015, and uncovered a vast collection of child pornography. A forensic examination revealed that RIVERA used his devices to search for, download, and save explicit images and videos of children as young as one-year-old.

The investigation, led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, uncovered approximately 6900 images and 885 videos of prepubescent children engaging in sexually explicit conduct on RIVERA’s digital devices. This is a stark reminder of the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse that plagues our nation.

Acting U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans praised the work of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in investigating this matter. Assistant United States Attorney Jordan Ginsberg and Special Assistant United States Attorney J. Ryan McLaren were instrumental in bringing RIVERA to justice.

As part of his sentence, RIVERA will be required to register as a sex offender pursuant to the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act. This is a critical step in protecting our communities from individuals who pose a threat to our children’s safety and well-being.

The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. This effort marshals federal, state, and local resources to better locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.
