Montana Man Sentenced to 15 Years for Meth Trafficking, Firearms Crimes

A Butte man has been sentenced to 15 years and 8 months in prison for his role in a methamphetamine trafficking ring in Montana. Joshua Jay Schroeder, 40, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and conspiracy to commit money laundering.

Schroeder was sentenced on August 24, 2020 by U.S. District Judge Dana L. Christensen. He was detained at the time of sentencing.

According to court documents, law enforcement became aware of Schroeder’s involvement in drug trafficking in and around Montana in April 2019. An undercover agent purchased methamphetamine from Schroeder in April 2019, and by June 2019, law enforcement found multiple pounds of methamphetamine mailed to Schroeder’s address.

A search of Schroeder’s house revealed 44 grams of methamphetamine and a digital scale. Investigators also found a total of five firearms in Schroeder’s vehicle. Schroeder had been convicted of multiple felonies in Montana and was prohibited from possessing firearms.

Schroeder admitted to law enforcement that he accepted packages of methamphetamine for redistribution and helped collect and wire money used in drug trafficking. Financial records showed that Schroeder wired drug money from Montana to Mexico and California.

The case was investigated by the Montana Division of Criminal Investigation, Drug Enforcement Administration, Homeland Security Investigations, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan G. Weldon prosecuted the case.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a U.S. Department of Justice initiative to reduce violent crime. Through PSN, federal, tribal, state, and local law enforcement partners in Montana focus on violent crime driven by methamphetamine trafficking, armed robbers, firearms offenses, and violent offenders with outstanding warrants.
