In a shocking turn of events, a Cedar Rapids man has been sentenced to more than 15 years in federal prison for his role in a massive methamphetamine trafficking operation.
Joshua Ryan Gorrell, 37, was handed the lengthy sentence on February 28 after pleading guilty to one count of possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute it within 1,000 feet of a protected location, and one count of possession of a firearm as an unlawful drug user.
The charges against Gorrell stem from a series of incidents that took place in July and August 2022. On July 22, 2022, Gorrell made a 911 call after an overdose victim was found dead at his residence. When police arrived, they discovered a staggering amount of illicit substances, including over two pounds of pure methamphetamine, 43 grams of fentanyl, 56 grams of a mixture of fentanyl and heroin, 68 grams of marijuana, and 238 grams of THC wax.
The search of Gorrell’s home revealed that he had cleverly hidden the drugs throughout the property, including in air ducts, laundry dryer vents, ceiling insulation, pipes, a fake plant, the freezer, and elsewhere.
Just weeks later, on August 22, 2022, police searched Gorrell’s home again and found a loaded firearm, $15,253 in cash, approximately 28 grams of ice methamphetamine, and approximately 252 grams of marijuana. A urine test also revealed that Gorrell was still using methamphetamine and fentanyl at the time of the search.
U.S. District Court Judge C.J. Williams handed down the sentence, which includes 188 months of imprisonment and a 10-year term of supervised release after Gorrell’s release from prison.
The case was prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Devra T. Hake and Assistant United States Attorney Dan Chatham, and was investigated as part of the Northern Iowa Heroin Initiative and the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) program. The case is also part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities nationwide.
Gorrell’s sentence serves as a stark reminder of the harsh consequences of engaging in illicit activities and the importance of community-based initiatives in preventing crime.
