A devastating act of violence on a San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation has resulted in a lengthy prison sentence for Josiah Kindelay, 26, of San Carlos, Arizona.
On January 12, 2019, Kindelay was driving his car while under the influence of alcohol, striking a 68-year-old Native American victim as he was preparing to change his van’s flat tire on the side of the road. The victim suffered serious bodily injury, including bone fractures to both legs, as a result of the collision.
The victim’s injuries were so severe that one of his legs had to be amputated. This heinous act of violence has left a lasting impact on the victim and his loved ones.
Kindelay, a San Carlos Apache Tribal member, previously pleaded guilty to Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury. U.S. District Judge John J. Tuchi sentenced him to 29 months in prison for his crimes.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs, San Carlos Investigation Unit, conducted the investigation in this case. The United States Attorney’s Office, District of Arizona, Phoenix, handled the prosecution.
