Fatal Kick: Local Dog Day Care Employee Charged with Felony Animal Cruelty
WASHINGTON, D.C. – In a shocking case of animal abuse, Jovon Hawkins, 25, of Washington, D.C., has pleaded guilty to felony animal cruelty. On May 27, 2024, Hawkins brutally killed Appa, a 4-year-old Shih Tzu mix, while working at City Dogs, a dog day care and boarding facility located at 301 H Street NE, Washington, D.C.
According to the government’s evidence, Hawkins was left alone in the facility during Memorial Day weekend in 2024. At approximately 7:40 p.m., Hawkins cornered Appa and a tan chihuahua that were sitting on a dog bed. Hawkins leaned over and reached towards the dogs, prompting one of them to react with a loud bark and the chihuahua to flee. Hawkins then moved the dog bed out of the corner with his left foot and used his hands to brace himself against the wall before kicking Appa. As Appa yelped in pain, Hawkins stomped on him and kicked him again, ultimately silencing the helpless dog.
Appa’s tragic death was a result of Hawkins’s heinous actions. The dog’s owners had boarded their beloved pet at City Dogs over the long weekend, expecting it to be safe and well-cared for. Instead, their trust was betrayed by Hawkins’s brutal behavior.
Hawkins admitted guilt on March 3, 2025, in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. The Honorable Robert Salerno has scheduled sentencing for May 5, 2025. Hawkins faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison for his crimes.
The Washington Humane Society investigated the case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian Hanley led the prosecution. This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of animal welfare and the need for vigilance in protecting our beloved pets.
Jovon Hawkins’s plea deal is a significant step towards justice for Appa and his owners. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates on Hawkins’s sentencing.
