Hazleton Man Sentenced to Prison on Cocaine Conspiracy Charge

In a move to combat the growing issue of cocaine trafficking in Luzerne County, a Hazleton man has been sentenced to federal prison on a charge of conspiracy to distribute cocaine.

Juan Carlos Alvarez, 28, a resident of Hazleton, was sentenced to 46 months in prison by United States District Judge Robert Mariani in federal court in Scranton.

According to United States Attorney Peter Smith, Alvarez pleaded guilty to the charge in March of this year. As part of his sentence, Alvarez will serve an additional 3 years under court supervision upon his release from prison.

The investigation into Alvarez’s activities was conducted by the United States Drug Enforcement Administration, the Hazleton Police Department, and the Butler Township Police Department.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney William S. Houser, who has a proven track record of securing convictions in high-profile cases.

Alvarez’s sentencing comes as a blow to the community, which has seen a rise in cocaine-related crimes in recent years. Law enforcement officials are urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.

The sentencing of Alvarez serves as a reminder that the U.S. Attorney’s Office is committed to holding individuals accountable for their crimes and working to make our communities safer.
