Rafael Hernandez, Methamphetamine Possession, Nebraska 2023

A Norfolk man has been sentenced to more than 11 years in prison for his role in a methamphetamine trafficking operation. Rafael Hernandez, 30, was sentenced to 140 months’ imprisonment by United States District Court Judge Brian C. Buescher on November 1, 2023, in federal court in Omaha.

According to the investigation, Hernandez was a passenger in a vehicle that was stopped on Highway 81 in Platte County, Nebraska, on August 27, 2022. A Platte County Sheriff’s Deputy initiated the traffic stop after noticing a defective headlight on the vehicle. While speaking with the driver, the deputy detected the odor of burnt marijuana and conducted a search of the vehicle.

During the search, a drawstring backpack was located in the trunk containing 1.14 kilograms of methamphetamine. Hernandez claimed that the vehicle and its contents belonged to him, and that the driver had no knowledge of the drugs. Both the driver and Hernandez were transported to the Platte County Detention Facility, where Hernandez again stated that the driver had nothing to do with the drugs.

The investigation was conducted by the Platte County Sheriff’s Office and Columbus Police Department. Hernandez will begin a 5-year term of supervised release after his release from prison, with no parole in the federal system.

The exact charges against Hernandez are possession with intent to distribute more than 500 grams of methamphetamine. This serious offense carries significant penalties, and Hernandez’s sentence reflects the severity of his crime.
