New York—The grim tale of Juan Carlos Padilla Santos, a reformed criminal who repeatedly defied the law, took another dark turn today as he was sentenced to 100 months in federal prison for illegal re-entry into the United States. Santos, a man with a violent history including murder and narcotics convictions, has been a recurrent presence on federal radar screens.
According to U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton of the Southern District of New York, Santos was first deported in 2010 following his conviction on drug trafficking charges. Yet, his criminal saga unfolded once more as he returned to America less than a year after his deportation. He faced another removal order while absent, but this time he didn’t miss the chance to re-enter the U.S.
In 2016, Santos’ past caught up with him in the Dominican Republic where he was convicted of murder and sentenced to 15 years behind bars. However, Santos skipped out on his sentence and made another illegal crossing back into the United States. His third deportation came in 2018 after being convicted of cocaine possession and bail jumping.
In a bizarre twist, Santos managed to fabricate his own death, only to reappear and attempt a fourth illegal entry into America in 2021. He deceived U.S. Customs and Border Protection by falsely claiming he was a lawful permanent resident and submitted a fraudulent green card replacement form.
Juan Carlos Padilla Santos, now aged 50, faces a tough future as he serves out his sentence alongside three years of supervised release to follow. The Assistant U.S. Attorney handling the case, Katherine Cheng, has vowed to pursue such dangerous felons to the fullest extent of the law.
Clayton lauded the efforts of Homeland Security Investigations for their unwavering commitment to these cases, while HSI Special Agent in Charge Ricky J. Patel emphasized Santos’ disregard for immigration laws. The case underscores the lengths some individuals are willing to go to evade justice and demonstrates the dedication of law enforcement in tracking them down.
