Luis Mercado, Machinegun Possession, New York 2024

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The gritty streets of Buffalo have once again become the scene of a federal investigation with the revelation that Luis Mercado, 24, a/k/a Yvng Fabii, has been indicted by a federal grand jury for possession of a machinegun and altering the serial number of a firearm.

U.S. Attorney Michael DiGiacomo announced the charges today, carrying a maximum penalty of up to ten years in prison. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Joshua A. Violanti, Louis M. Testani, and Jeffrey E. Intravatola are handling the case with a no-nonsense approach.

The saga began on February 9, 2024, during an intense men’s basketball game at Buffalo State University. Amidst the excitement, an altercation broke out. Mercado took flight but was soon cornered by law enforcement. The suspect raised his arms and confessed to carrying ‘the joint’ with him.

During a thorough pat down, police uncovered a loaded pistol equipped with a suspected machine gun conversion device and an extended magazine. The discovery of the defaced serial number on the firearm confirmed their suspicions.

The investigation into Mercado’s alleged crimes was a joint effort by the Federal Bureau of Investigation under Acting Special Agent-in-Charge Mark Grimm and the New York State Police, led by Major Amie Feroleto.

As with all criminal charges, it is important to note that Luis Mercado is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
