A Rhode Island man has pleaded guilty to fentanyl trafficking in federal court in Connecticut.
Juan H. Hazard, also known as ‘Money,’ 42, of Cranston, Rhode Island, pleaded guilty yesterday in New Haven federal court to a fentanyl trafficking offense.
Prosecutors say Hazard agreed to meet an individual at a location in Ledyard to conduct a narcotics transaction on April 26, 2017. Investigators stopped Hazard’s vehicle in Ledyard, where they found a wooden box containing three shrink-wrapped packages with approximately 338 grams of fentanyl in the rear of the vehicle.
Hazard was arrested after the discovery, with his young child in the back seat of the car at the time of the offense.
Hazard pleaded guilty to one count of possession with intent to distribute 40 grams or more of fentanyl, an offense that carries a mandatory minimum term of imprisonment of five years and a maximum term of imprisonment of 40 years.
He is scheduled to be sentenced by U.S. District Judge Alvin W. Thompson in Hartford on December 10, 2018.
Hazard has been detained since his federal arrest on May 4, 2018.
The investigation into Hazard’s fentanyl trafficking activity was conducted by the FBI and the Ledyard, Town of Groton and Waterford Police Departments.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Patricia Stolfi Collins.
