Juarez Gets 46 Months for Arming Mexican Cartels

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – A brazen attempt to funnel weapons south of the border has landed a 19-year-old Brownsville resident in federal prison. Kenji Daniel Juarez was sentenced to 46 months behind bars after pleading guilty to facilitating the illegal export of firearms to Mexico, U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei announced today.

Juarez admitted to receiving, concealing, buying, selling, and transporting firearms and ammunition magazines with the explicit intent of smuggling them into Mexico. The scheme unraveled after law enforcement observed him accepting multiple firearms from various individuals at a McAllen gun show on November 16, 2024. A subsequent search of a Brownsville residence revealed a disturbing cache: seven handguns, eight semi-automatic rifles, and 22 ammunition magazines stashed in his bedroom. He confessed to authorities that these weapons were destined for Mexico and that he had previously engaged in similar smuggling operations.

U.S. District Judge Fernando Rodriguez Jr. didn’t mince words at the sentencing hearing. The court reviewed photographic evidence of the weapons and explicitly noted their potential for fueling cartel violence. “These were highly dangerous weapons,” the judge stated, “capable of inflicting significant harm and furthering criminal activity.” The 46-month prison term will be immediately followed by three years of supervised release, ensuring Juarez remains under scrutiny even after his release.

The investigation, spearheaded by Immigration and Customs Enforcement – Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), exposed a clear and present danger. HSI agents meticulously tracked Juarez’s movements, culminating in the search and seizure of the illegal arsenal. Assistant U.S. Attorney Angel Castro skillfully prosecuted the case, securing a conviction and a sentence that reflects the seriousness of the offense.

This case isn’t an isolated incident. It’s a key component of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a nationwide initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. Launched in 2021, PSN focuses on fostering community trust, supporting violence prevention programs, and strategically targeting enforcement efforts. The Department of Justice is doubling down on these principles to make communities safer.

Juarez remains in custody pending transfer to a yet-to-be-determined Federal Bureau of Prisons facility. His case serves as a stark warning: those who seek to profit from arming criminal organizations will face the full force of federal law. The flow of illegal weapons across the border continues to be a major priority for law enforcement, and investigations like this one demonstrate a commitment to disrupting those networks and holding perpetrators accountable.
