Two Men Arrested for Illicit Firearms Trade in Puerto Rico
San Juan, Puerto Rico – In a shocking turn of events, Julio Rodríguez-Marquez and Josué Méndez-Rivera, two individuals involved in the illicit firearms trade, were arrested and charged by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Puerto Rico. The charges, announced by Rosa Emilia Rodríguez-Vélez, include conspiring to engage in the business of dealing in firearms without a license and dealing in firearms without a license.
The investigation, led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), revealed a complex web of illicit firearms transactions that took place between May and August 2016. During this period, Rodríguez-Marquez arranged various firearms transactions with the assistance of co-conspirator Méndez-Rivera, who delivered a rifle to a buyer on two separate occasions.
ATF agents seized four AR-15-variant rifles and a handgun throughout the course of the investigation. When agents arrested Méndez-Rivera, they found a rifle that he intended to sell, further implicating him in the illicit firearms trade.
Rodríguez-Marquez was also arrested at his residence, where agents executed a search warrant and found a firearm that he was not licensed to possess, as well as materials used to manufacture homemade firearms.
If convicted, Rodríguez-Marquez and Méndez-Rivera face up to 5 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. It is essential to note that the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
