Assault Charges Brought Against Eagle Butte Man
A disturbing case of domestic violence has come to light in Eagle Butte, South Dakota, as Julius Titus III, a 35-year-old local resident, has been indicted by a federal grand jury for Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, and Assault Resulting in Substantial Bodily Injury to an Intimate Partner.
The indictment alleges that on June 26, 2014, Titus unlawfully assaulted two victims. The first victim was allegedly assaulted with shod feet, a door, and a frying pan, causing serious bodily injury. The second victim, an intimate partner, suffered substantial bodily injury as a result of the assault.
Titus, who appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on December 11, 2014, has pled not guilty to the indictment.
The maximum penalty upon conviction is 10 years of custody and/or a $250,000 fine, 3 years of supervised release, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.
The investigation is being conducted by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Mikal Hanson prosecuting the case. Titus was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service and a trial date has not been set.
The charges against Titus are merely accusations, and he is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
In this case, the defendant’s actions have had severe consequences for the victims involved. The alleged assault has left both victims with serious and substantial bodily injuries, highlighting the need for stricter measures to prevent domestic violence.
