Ocklawaha Man Pleads Guilty to Gun Charges in Florida
Ocala, Florida – In a shocking turn of events, Justin Heath Griffin, a 35-year-old Ocklawaha resident, has pleaded guilty to one count of possessing a firearm and ammunition affecting interstate commerce by a convicted felon.
Griffin’s guilty plea was announced by United States Attorney Roger B. Handberg, who stated that the charge is punishable by up to 10 years in federal prison.
According to court records, Griffin was arrested on March 3, 2022, by officers from the City of Ocala Police Department for driving without a valid driver’s license. During the arrest, the officers discovered a loaded firearm, ammunition, drug paraphernalia, and methamphetamine in Griffin’s possession.
Griffin has eight prior state felony convictions, including possession of a firearm by a violent offender in 2006 and armed robbery in 2007. As a convicted felon, he is prohibited from possessing a firearm or ammunition under federal law.
The case was investigated by the Ocala Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. It is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Hannah Nowalk.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities nationwide.
Griffin will be sentenced on March 9, 2023, before Senior United States District Judge Gregory A. Presnell.
With this guilty plea, Griffin faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison. The outcome of the sentencing hearing will determine the exact length of his sentence.
