DAVENPORT, IA – In a major blow to the Quad Cities area’s illicit marijuana trade, Justin Scott Coffey, 30, of Davenport, Iowa, was sentenced to 63 months in prison for his role in a conspiracy to distribute over 100 kilograms of marijuana.
On January 22, 2015, United States District Court Chief Judge James E. Gritzner handed down the sentence, which will be followed by four years of supervised release. Coffey was also ordered to pay $100 to the Crime Victims Fund.
According to court documents, Coffey and other individuals entered into an agreement to distribute over 100 kilograms of marijuana from June 2007 to April 2013. During this time period, Coffey traveled to California and arranged for the purchase of multiple pound quantities of marijuana. He then mailed packages of marijuana back to other Iowa co-conspirators for re-distribution in the Quad Cities area. Coffey also transported marijuana and drug proceeds himself in and out of Iowa.
The investigation was led by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and the Quad City Metropolitan Enforcement Group (QCMEG). The case was prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa.
"This sentence sends a clear message that those involved in the distribution of marijuana will be held accountable," said United States Attorney Nicholas A. Klinefeldt. "We will continue to work tirelessly to disrupt and dismantle these types of conspiracies."
Coffey’s actions had a significant impact on the community, and his sentence is a testament to the dedication of law enforcement agencies in the area. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and the Quad City Metropolitan Enforcement Group (QCMEG) worked together to bring Coffey to justice.
