A 43-year-old Kane man has admitted to purchasing methamphetamine on the dark web for distribution in Western Pennsylvania, federal authorities announced.
Michael Anderson, of Kane, pleaded guilty in federal court to attempting to possess with intent to distribute more than 50 grams of a mixture or substance containing a detectable amount of methamphetamine, Acting U.S. Attorney Stephen R. Kaufman said.
According to authorities, Anderson bought the methamphetamine on the dark web with the intention of selling and redistributing the drugs in the Western District of Pennsylvania.
Anderson faces up to 40 years in prison, a fine of $5 million, or both, under the law. His sentence will be determined by Judge David S. Cercone on November 22, 2021.
The law enforcement agencies involved in the investigation included the United States Postal Inspection Service, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the McKean County Detectives, and the McKean County Drug Taskforce.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul S. Sellers is prosecuting the case.
Anderson was allowed to remain free on bond pending his sentencing hearing.
This case is a stark reminder of the dangers of the dark web and the individuals who seek to profit from its anonymity to peddle illicit substances.
