Anchorage woman sentenced to 54 months for bank fraud and aggravated identity theft
Anchorage, Alaska – A local insurance saleswoman has been sentenced to 54 months in prison for her role in a bank fraud and aggravated identity theft scheme. Kara Hayden, Jr., 50, of Anchorage, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Sharon L. Gleason.
According to court records, Hayden applied for 17 credit cards using the names, social security numbers, and dates of birth of nine different victims without their knowledge or authorization. Several of the victims had purchased veteran’s funeral benefits from Hayden, and she used their personal information obtained during that process to fraudulently apply for credit cards.
Hayden obtained approximately $14,500 in cash and retail goods prior to the discovery of her scheme. A pleading filed with the court indicated that Hayden had also worked as an agent selling identity theft protection for nine years and was uniquely aware of the adverse consequences associated with identity theft.
Hayden’s crimes were particularly egregious because she targeted veterans who have served our country, noted Judge Gleason. The court commended Hayden for her actions, calling them ‘particularly serious’.
Acting U.S. Attorney Bryan Schroder commended the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, assisted by the Alaska State Insurance Division, for the investigation in this case.
The case highlights the importance of protecting sensitive information and being cautious when sharing personal details. It is a reminder that individuals can be held accountable for their actions, even when they seem insignificant.
The sentencing follows an investigation that began in 2015 and was assisted by the Alaska State Insurance Division. Hayden was found guilty of one count of bank fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft.
