A North Carolina man was sentenced to 10 years in prison for conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute 10 kilograms of cocaine. Kareem Akeem McMurrin, 41, was convicted of trafficking the large quantity of cocaine, which was intercepted by law enforcement investigators.
According to court documents, McMurrin and another person conspired to ship a package containing 10 kilograms of cocaine from San Diego, California, to Portsmouth, Virginia. On February 5, law enforcement investigators intercepted the package and removed the cocaine, delivering the empty parcel to the intended address where it was retrieved by McMurrin.
When investigators attempted to arrest McMurrin, he fled at a high rate of speed with his adolescent child in the vehicle. McMurrin attempted to discard the package and continued to flee. Investigators located McMurrin in March and took him into custody on an outstanding warrant.
“McMurrin’s conduct was inherently dangerous and damaging on a transnational scale,” said Lindsey Halligan, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. “He attempted to contribute to the success of a dangerous and larger enterprise. This administration has prioritized the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations and to protect our communities from their crimes. My office will persist in prosecuting drug traffickers to achieve these goals.”
The Drug Enforcement Administration and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service investigated this case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin Comstock and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Marc W. West, an Assistant Attorney General with the Virginia Attorney General’s Office, prosecuted the case.
