Karl Shroulote, Sr., Sexual Abuse in Indian Country, New Mexico 2018

A 46-year-old man from Acoma, New Mexico, has pleaded guilty to a serious crime in Indian Country.

Karl Shroulote, Sr., an enrolled member of the Pueblo of Acoma, admitted to sexually assaulting a victim, identified as Jane Doe, while she was unconscious in his home on the Acoma Pueblo on April 29, 2018.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs investigated the case with assistance from the Pueblo of Acoma Police Department. Assistant United States Attorneys Alexander F. Flores is prosecuting the case.

Shroulote will remain on conditions of release pending sentencing, which has not been scheduled. By the terms of his plea agreement, he faces between five years and three months and six and a half years in prison, and must register as a sex offender.

The investigation and prosecution of this case demonstrate the commitment of the U.S. Attorney’s Office to holding perpetrators accountable for their crimes, particularly in Indian Country.
