In a shocking case of betrayal of trust, Katrenia Hartman, 55, of Sand Springs, Oklahoma, has been sentenced for Bank Fraud and Willfully Making and Subscribing a False Federal Income Tax Return in a Tulsa court. The harsh sentence comes after Hartman was found guilty of exploiting her position as a church office manager for over 16 years.
According to court documents, Hartman was entrusted with various duties, including payroll, church bills, and bank deposits. However, in 2016, she began abusing the trust bestowed upon her by signing checks she made out to herself and forging the additional signature needed. She then attempted to conceal her tracks by entering false descriptions into the church’s bookkeeping system.
Hartman was able to receive fraudulent funds while she was in this position, and she failed to report the increase in her income to the IRS. She also claimed more than $78k in fake medical and dental expenses in order to reduce her tax liability.
U.S. District Judge Gregory K. Frizzell handed down a 30-month prison sentence for Hartman, followed by five years of supervised release. In addition to her prison time, Hartman is ordered to pay the IRS more than $177k in restitution and more than $735k to the church she defrauded, totaling over $910k in restitution.
The U.S. Secret Service, IRS – Criminal Investigations, and Tulsa Police Department investigated the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney David D. Whipple prosecuting it. Hartman was permitted to remain on bond and voluntarily surrender to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of financial crimes and the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions. As Grimy Times continues to investigate and expose such cases, we remain committed to shedding light on the darker corners of our society.
In this case, Hartman’s actions not only financially ruined the church she was supposed to serve but also undermined the trust of her community. Her sentence sends a clear message that such crimes will not be tolerated and that those who commit them will face severe consequences.
