PITTSBURGH – In a devastating case of child exploitation, a former resident of Penn Hills, Pennsylvania, has been charged with coercing and enticing minors to engage in illegal sexual activity. Kaung Myat Kyaw, a 23-year-old man, was indicted by a federal grand jury in Pittsburgh on March 7, 2023, on seven counts of child sexual exploitation.
According to the indictment, Kyaw enticed and coerced five minor victims between August 9, 2020, and September 2021, using the internet and a cellular telephone service. He is also accused of producing and distributing material depicting the sexual exploitation of a minor. On September 22, 2021, Kyaw distributed the material to another individual in Texas.
Kyaw’s charges include Coercion and Enticement of a Minor to Engage in Illegal Sexual Activity, Production of Material Depicting the Sexual Exploitation of a Minor, and Distribution of Material Depicting the Sexual Exploitation of a Minor. If convicted, Kyaw faces a maximum sentence of not less than 15 years in prison and up to life, a fine of $1,500,000, or both.
Kyaw was arrested on November 18, 2021, by agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and was detained pending trial. Assistant United States Attorney Carolyn J. Bloch is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government.
The investigation was led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Fairfax County, Virginia Police Department, the Wright County, Minnesota Sheriff’s Office, and other local police departments as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse.
A superseding indictment is an accusation, and Kyaw is presumed innocent until proven guilty. Project Safe Childhood has been instrumental in locating, apprehending, and prosecuting individuals who sexually exploit children and identifying and rescuing victims.
The case is a stark reminder of the importance of protecting our children from predators like Kyaw. The community must remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities. For more information about Project Safe Childhood, please visit www.justice.gov/psc.
The law enforcement agencies involved in this case are to be commended for their tireless efforts in bringing Kyaw to justice. This case is a testament to their commitment to protecting our children from harm.
