Kayla Slater, Prohibited Person in Possession of a Firearm, West Virginia 2020

A Charleston woman has been sentenced to three years in prison for possessing a firearm and large quantities of fentanyl.

The conviction stems from a car stop on August 27, 2020, where Kayla Slater, 29, was found with an unloaded Beretta Px4 Storm 9mm semi-automatic pistol in plain view in her handbag. The firearm was seized by law enforcement officers, along with approximately 80 grams of fentanyl.

Slater later admitted to the officers that the gun and drugs were hers and that she had been trafficking large quantities of controlled substances. The defendant also admitted to being addicted to heroin.

Slater is prohibited from possessing firearms due to being an habitual user of a controlled substance.

United States District Judge Irene C. Berger imposed the three-year prison sentence, which will be followed by three years of supervised release. Assistant U.S. Attorney Negar M. Kordestani prosecuted the case.

The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), the centerpiece of the violent crime reduction efforts. PSN is an evidence-based program proven to be effective at reducing violent crime. Through PSN, a broad spectrum of stakeholders work together to identify the most pressing violent crime problems in the community and develop comprehensive solutions to address them.

Slater’s actions put the community at risk, and her conviction serves as a reminder of the importance of holding individuals accountable for their crimes. The U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to prioritize cases like this, where individuals are found to be in possession of firearms and controlled substances.
