KANSAS CITY, MO – Two Kansas City men are facing federal charges after a month-long spree of robberies targeting banks and businesses across the metro area. Makih A. Hall, 21, and Lazaro Medina-Lopez, 29, were indicted July 16, 2025, on charges that could put them behind bars for decades.
The unsealed federal indictment details a conspiracy to commit Hobbs Act robbery, along with multiple counts of Hobbs Act robbery and bank robbery. The pair allegedly operated between June 1, 2024, and June 14, 2024, hitting multiple financial institutions and businesses. Hall also faces a separate charge for attempted Hobbs Act robbery, while Medina-Lopez is charged individually with attempted bank robbery.
Federal prosecutors aren’t holding back. Each count – conspiracy, Hobbs Act robbery, bank robbery, and attempted bank robbery – carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison with no chance of parole. While the indictment lays out the accusations, it’s crucial to remember these are just allegations. The burden of proof rests with the government, and a jury will ultimately decide their guilt or innocence.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Q. McCarther is leading the prosecution. The investigation was a joint effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department, and the Independence, Missouri Police Department, demonstrating a coordinated response to the escalating crime wave. Details of specific robbery locations and amounts taken have not yet been released, but sources confirm the investigation involved multiple jurisdictions.
This case isn’t being treated as an isolated incident. It’s part of “Operation Take Back America,” a nationwide initiative spearheaded by the Department of Justice. The program aims to combat illegal immigration, dismantle cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and protect communities from violent crime. The operation leverages resources from the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN).
A sentencing hearing will be scheduled following a presentence investigation conducted by the United States Probation Office. The court will consider advisory sentencing guidelines and other statutory factors when determining the final punishment. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as they become available. This is just the latest example of how federal agencies are cracking down on brazen criminals targeting the heartland.
