KANSAS CITY, MO – Justice, however delayed, slammed down hard on two Kansas City-area men this week. Shawn Burkhalter, also known as “Deuce,” 35, of Kansas City, and Joshua Nesbitt, also known as “T,” 30, of Crowder, Mississippi, both received life sentences in federal court for their roles in a sprawling drug-trafficking operation stained with blood. The pair were convicted after a trial revealing a decade of criminal activity and calculated violence.
U.S. District Judge Brian C. Wimes handed down the life-without-parole sentences. Burkhalter and Nesbitt were found guilty on a litany of charges, including one count each of conspiracy to distribute cocaine and marijuana, possessing those drugs with intent to distribute, robbery, two counts of discharging a firearm in furtherance of a crime, brandishing a firearm, being felons in possession of a firearm, conspiracy to tamper with witnesses and evidence, murdering a potential witness, and evidence tampering. Burkhalter also faced a separate count of witness tampering.
The conspiracy stretched from 2008 to February 20, 2018, a ten-year reign of terror fueled by cocaine and marijuana sales. Prosecutors laid out a grim picture at trial, detailing two particularly brutal murders. On September 10, 2015, Burkhalter and Nesbitt robbed Danny Lamont Dean, shooting and killing him with a Rock River Arms AR-15, 5.56-caliber semi-automatic rifle. Less than a month later, on October 4, 2015, Nesbitt – acting on Burkhalter’s orders while Burkhalter was already in custody – used the same weapon to murder Anthony Dwayne Johnson. Johnson, the court heard, was silenced because Burkhalter suspected him of cooperating with investigators regarding Dean’s murder.
The violence wasn’t limited to murders. On September 8, 2015, Burkhalter and Nesbitt robbed a Kansas City business, again brandishing the AR-15. The prosecution highlighted Nesbitt’s continued violent tendencies, presenting evidence of repeated assaults on staff at detention facilities while he awaited trial. This wasn’t simply a drug operation; it was a pattern of brazen disregard for human life and the law. Six additional co-defendants have already pleaded guilty and been sentenced for their involvement in the conspiracy: Sharika Hooker and Autry Hines, both of Kansas City, Mo.; Joslyn Lee, also known as “Bless,” and Nickayla Jones, both of Blue Springs, Mo.; Rachel Ryce of Raytown, Mo.; and Anthony Peltier, also known as “A-1,” of Lawrence, Kansas.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys David Raskin, Patrick C. Edwards, and David Wagner secured the convictions and life sentences. The case was a joint effort between the FBI and the Kansas City, Mo., Police Department, a testament to the collaborative effort needed to dismantle such a deeply entrenched criminal enterprise. This sentencing sends a clear message: in Kansas City, and across the federal system, those who deal in drugs and death will face the full weight of the law.
The Rock River Arms AR-15, repeatedly used in these crimes, now stands as a grim symbol of the brutality perpetrated by Burkhalter and Nesbitt. While life in prison offers no guarantee of safety to others, it does remove these two predators from the streets, bringing a measure of closure to the victims’ families and a small respite from the violence that plagued Kansas City for a decade.
