Iowa Man Sentenced to 19 Years for Fentanyl Overdose Death
A 32-year-old Cedar Rapids man who distributed heroin and fentanyl to a victim who subsequently overdosed has been sentenced to nearly two decades in federal prison, according to the Department of Justice.
Jacob Lee Blauer, 32, received the prison term after pleading guilty on November 29, 2023, to distribution of a controlled substance resulting in serious bodily injury. The sentence was handed down by United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams in Cedar Rapids.
Evidence in the case established that on November 7, 2022, Blauer prepared a shot of heroin and fentanyl and gave it to another person. The victim used the drugs and immediately overdosed, with Blauer leaving the scene. Emergency personnel arrived and revived the victim with Narcan.
After the incident, Blauer continued to sell heroin and fentanyl, according to prosecutors. He was sentenced to 236 months’ imprisonment and must also serve a 5-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.
Blauer is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Devra T. Hake and was investigated as part of the Northern Iowa Heroin Initiative and the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) program of the United States Department of Justice.
