A 32-year-old man from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, received a 19-year prison sentence for distributing heroin and fentanyl that contributed to an overdose.
Jacob Lee Blauer, 32, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was sentenced to 236 months’ imprisonment after pleading guilty to distribution of a controlled substance resulting in serious bodily injury.
The evidence in the case established that on November 7, 2022, Blauer prepared a shot of heroin and fentanyl and gave it to another person. The victim used the drugs and immediately overdosed. Blauer left the scene, and emergency personnel arrived and revived the victim with Narcan.
Blauer continued to sell heroin and fentanyl after the incident, according to the evidence. He was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams.
Blauer’s prison term will be followed by a 5-year term of supervised release. There is no parole in the federal system. He is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Devra T. Hake and was investigated as part of the Northern Iowa Heroin Initiative and the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) program of the United States Department of Justice through a cooperative effort of the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Cedar Rapids Police Department.
