New Orleans Man Indicted for Gun-Toting Tapentadol & Marijuana Ring
Grimy Times is reporting that Kendrick Williams, a 19-year-old New Orleans native, has been hit with a four-count indictment for violating the Federal Controlled Substances and Gun Control Acts. In a brazen display of disregard for the law, Williams allegedly conspired with others to distribute and possess with intent to distribute tapentadol and marijuana within the Eastern District of Louisiana.
According to court documents, Williams’ alleged crimes took place between a time unknown but prior to March 7, 2024, and continuing to on or about April 3, 2024. During this time, he allegedly conspired with others to knowingly possess, with the intent to distribute, a mixture of tapentadol and marijuana on multiple occasions. This is not the only egregious act attributed to Williams, as he allegedly possessed firearms, including a Glock Model 23 and a Glock Model 19x, in furtherance of drug trafficking crimes.
Williams faces up to 20 years in prison, up to a $1,000,000 fine, and at least three years of supervised release for each of the drug trafficking charges in Counts 1, 2, and 4. However, the charge of possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime in Count 3 carries a mandatory minimum sentence of five years up to life imprisonment, which is to run consecutively to all other sentences, up to a $250,000 fine, and up to five years of supervised release. Each count also carries a mandatory special assessment fee of $100.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the New Orleans Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney David Berman of the Violent Crime Unit is in charge of the prosecution. U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans reiterated that the indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities. The Department’s violent crime reduction strategy focuses on fostering trust and legitimacy in communities, supporting community-based organizations, setting focused and strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring the results.
