Ashton Causey, Gun and Drug Crimes, Louisiana 2024

NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA – In a major blow to the city’s gang underworld, 22-year-old Ashton Causey has been sentenced to 210 months in federal prison for his role in a string of drug and firearms crimes.

The harsh sentence was handed down on May 7, 2024, by U.S. District Judge Darrel James Papillion, who also ordered Causey to pay a mandatory $600 special assessment fee as part of his supervised release.

Causey pled guilty on January 19, 2024, to multiple charges related to the possession and distribution of narcotics, including marijuana and fentanyl, as well as the illegal possession of a machinegun and a firearm.

The charges against Causey were part of a broader effort to crack down on gang activity in the city, which has seen a surge in violent crime in recent years. The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the New Orleans Police Department, the Louisiana State Police, and the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Assistant United States Attorney Maurice E. Landrieu, Jr. handled the prosecution, which was part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative. The program aims to reduce violent crime and gun violence by fostering trust and legitimacy in communities, supporting community-based organizations, and setting strategic enforcement priorities.

Causing harm to the community is a serious offense that will not be tolerated. Causey’s lengthy sentence serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of engaging in such activities. The citizens of New Orleans can rest a little easier knowing that his actions will not go unpunished.
