MASON CITY, IA – Thomas Alan Newman, 60, of Swaledale, Iowa, will spend the next six years in federal prison after being sentenced for his depraved involvement with child pornography. Newman received the sentence on April 25, 2024, following a guilty plea in October 2023 to Possession of Child Pornography.
The investigation, triggered by a May 2021 report to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) from Facebook, revealed Newman wasn’t just a passive receiver. Law enforcement discovered, through a search warrant of his account, that Newman actively sought out and solicited child pornography from others. He even conspired with another individual to create a Facebook group dedicated to the sharing and trading of this horrific material.
During questioning, Newman readily admitted to the activity flagged by NCMEC. He confessed to not only receiving the images and videos but to actively sharing approximately 50 instances of child pornography, some of which depicted particularly disturbing and abusive content involving infants and toddlers. This wasn’t a momentary lapse; it was a deliberate and sickening pattern of behavior.
United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand, presiding in Sioux City, handed down the 72-month sentence, along with a $30,000 fine and assessments. But prison isn’t the end of Newman’s accountability. Upon release, he will be subject to a 5-year term of supervised release and will be required to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life. Forget about parole – the federal system doesn’t offer it.
Newman is currently in the custody of the United States Marshals Service, awaiting transport to a designated federal prison facility. This case was prosecuted as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative aimed at dismantling the networks that exploit and abuse children. Assistant United States Attorney Kraig R. Hamit led the prosecution, with crucial investigative work provided by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office.
