Topeka Man Gets 84 Months for Child Porn

A Topeka man has been sentenced to 84 months in federal prison for downloading child pornography from the internet. Mark A. Hastert, 55, pleaded guilty to one count of receiving child pornography.

“Consumers of child pornography help create a market and demand for the production of images of sexual abuse and exploitation of real children,” said U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom. “They contribute to the cycle of abuse and are in part responsible for the harm suffered by children.”

Hastert admitted that the investigation began in September 2011 when a task force with the FBI cyber crime unit in Kansas City, Mo., downloaded child pornography from his computer using a file sharing program. Investigators followed an electronic trail to Hastert’s home in Topeka, where a forensic examination located 875 images and 58 videos of child pornography on his computer.

Grissom commended the FBI and Assistant U.S. Attorney Christine Kenney for their work on the case.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of child pornography and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable. As Grissom noted, consumers of child pornography contribute to the cycle of abuse and are responsible for the harm suffered by children.

The sentence handed down to Hastert is a significant one, and it sends a message to those who would engage in similar crimes: the consequences will be severe. We must continue to work together to prevent the production and distribution of child pornography and to protect the victims of these heinous crimes.

As the investigation into Hastert’s crimes continues, it is clear that the consequences will be severe. The 84-month sentence is a testament to the hard work and dedication of law enforcement and prosecutors in bringing perpetrators to justice.
